Grandiose vision! To push back a little bit on the motivation, I would argue that inventing AI is exactly how "humans solving their hardest problems" looks like. AI is not some alien whose help we beg for, it's tech made by us. Everything AI achieves is a celebration of human ingenuity.

I think inventing AI can absolutely do that, given the right structure and motivations. And true—it is tech made by us, and is a celebration of human ingenuity.

But AI is also different than any other tech made by us before, in ways that will challenge our ability to deploy it for good. I would simply like our AI futures to depend much less on the market and the state to ensure that they are positive.

100% agree. Have you read my post on the techno-pragmatist manifesto?

Yes, it's a great post. On one hand, it's hard to disagree with any part of it. But on the other hand, I want to reject it for exactly that reason.

My skeptical take (perhaps uncharitably) is that it seems to assume that our current system is fundamentally the right one, and it's just a matter of finding that goldilocks sweet-spot by making the right tweaks at the margins. It accepts all the same dilemmas of our current system, but tries to narrow the space of possible solutions so they don't go too far in either direction. I struggle to understand how it would translate into practices that would be noticeably different from our current reality.

My intuition is that there are more fundamental issues with both our current system and our new technological reality that we must account for. But, I still haven't thought through it enough to offer anything coherent. When I do, I'll either write up a post or comment directly on yours.

Yeah the simplest attack comes from skepticism, how do we know that what we know is enough? My answer is we don't, but on pragmatist grounds, I cannot accept passive skepticism either. Pragmatism is biased towards action.
